Treatment

Microsuction

A gentle, water-free method of removing ear wax under magnification, widely regarded as the safest first-choice technique.

What happens during the appointment

After your consultation and otoscopy, your ear canal is examined using magnification and a bright light source. A fine suction probe then lifts the wax away a little at a time. Because there is no water involved, the canal stays dry and the whole process can be stopped and checked at any moment.

Most appointments take between 20 and 45 minutes depending on how much wax is present and how comfortable your ears are.

Why microsuction is often preferred

The ear canal is viewed directly throughout, so nothing is done blind
No water, so it suits perforated eardrums, grommets and previous ear surgery
Well suited to hearing aid users and to hard, dry or impacted wax
Immediate results in most cases, with no mess

How it feels

The suction makes a noise similar to a vacuum cleaner, which can sound loud while it is close to the eardrum. Some people notice a brief cold sensation or mild dizziness, and this settles quickly. It should not be painful - tell me at any point and I will pause.

Treatment

Ear irrigation

Controlled, low-pressure warm water used with modern electronic equipment - a comfortable option for softened wax when it is clinically appropriate for your ears.

What happens during the appointment

Following your consultation and otoscopy, warm water at body temperature is directed along the ear canal wall at a carefully controlled pressure. The water flows back out into a collecting basin, bringing softened wax with it. Your ears are re-examined and dried, and the process is repeated only if needed.

Irrigation is not used blind - the canal and eardrum are checked before and after treatment, and microsuction or manual removal is used instead if that is the safer option for you.

Preparing your ears

Softening is important for irrigation. Use medical-grade olive oil spray or drops two to three times a day for at least five days before your appointment - 3–4 sprays in each ear, lying or tilting the head so the oil can travel down the canal.

When irrigation isn't suitable

A perforated eardrum, grommets, or previous ear surgery
Current ear infection, discharge or significant ear pain
Only one hearing ear, or a history of dizziness triggered by water
Cleft palate, or previous complications following irrigation

If any of these apply, microsuction is usually offered instead - your appointment fee is unaffected.

After your visit

Aftercare & ear health

Simple, practical advice for keeping your ears comfortable and clear after treatment - and for knowing when to get in touch.

For the first 24–48 hours

Keep your ears dry - no swimming, and shield them in the shower
Expect sounds to seem unusually loud at first; this settles as you adjust
Mild tickling or a slight echo can occur and usually passes within a day
Pause softening drops unless you have been advised otherwise

Looking after your ears longer term

Ears are self-cleaning, and wax is normal and protective. Never use cotton buds or ear candles - both push wax deeper and risk damaging the canal. If you are prone to build-up, a few sprays of medical-grade olive oil once or twice a week is usually enough to keep wax soft and moving.

Hearing aid users, people who wear earplugs regularly, and anyone with narrow canals often benefit from a routine check every 6–12 months.

When to seek advice

Contact your GP, or get in touch with me, if you develop ear pain that does not settle, discharge or bleeding, sudden or worsening hearing loss, persistent dizziness, or new ringing in the ear. If symptoms are severe or sudden, please seek same-day medical advice.

This page is general information and does not replace individual clinical advice. Your own aftercare instructions, given at your appointment, always take priority.

Growing with the island

Ellan Wellness has been intentionally branded as a healthcare and wellbeing clinic so that services can grow over time. Alongside ear care, a Level 4 Foot Health Care Practitioner Diploma is currently being completed, with foot health services planned as the next addition.

For now, every appointment is dedicated to professional ear care.

Our name & our brand

"Ellan" comes from Ellan Vannin, the Manx name for the Isle of Man. The identity draws on the island's coastline - particularly Fenella Beach - with soft sea greens, pebble neutrals and a warm gold to reflect calm, trust and care.
